What Did White People Think Racists Believe Before Steve King Admitted It?

The muted horror of white people reacting to Iowa Congressman Steve King’s out-and-out racism last night is... slightly amusing to me.

Like, Chris Hayes — who I love — threw out “Hitler” and “Stalin” the way a person decants an entire bottle of Febreze when a dog pees on the couch in front of company. But, like an embarrassed dog owner, his physical reaction was almost to protect King from full onslaught he was about to receive from his other guests. It was like he couldn’t believe that King was as racist as he just sounded, and wanted to make sure nobody overreacted to the racist Congressman Hayes invited to the party.

If you didn’t see it:

And here’s a transcript of the most stupid statement:

“This ‘old white people’ business does get a little tired, Charlie,” King said. “I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about, where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”

And I laugh because... King’s a racist. He’s been racist for a long time. What the hell did you think he believed? What did Chris Hayes think he believed? That all men were created equal? Motherf**ker has a Confederate Flag on his desk. If you invite a racist on your show, he might say something racist.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the Trump campaign, it’s that the media needs to stop thinking that these people aren’t every bit as racist as they are. The media needs to stop covering for them. If you support Trump (which King does), and constantly speak out about the ills of immigration (which King does), and decide to make the Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill the hill you are willing to die on (which King did), then you probably also believe that everything worthwhile about Western Civilization was done by white people. That is an entirely logical extension of King’s repulsive actions and statements. How can we be surprised when he goes on television and says it?

And how can we be surprised that there are a lot of white people, voting for Trump, who think the exact same thing? Come on now, all these racists aren’t out here supporting Trump because they respect his business acumen. They’re out here because Trump is telling them it’s okay to be racist. It’s okay for them to come out of the closet. It’s okay to go on television and call other people “subgroups,” and have that be just fine. Trump is the Harvey Milk of the white pride movement. Bigoted and proud.

Honestly, what the f**k kind of country did these white media types think we were living in all this time? When they talk about working class white antipathy towards Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, what do they think they’re talking about? Monetary policy? The Federalist Papers? We’re talking about racist and sexist whites who long for the days you could beat your wife and curb stomp a black person without catching hell for it.

Eventually, those whites have to lose for the country to move forward. This election is about those whites trying to stop the progress of the rest of us. The sooner the media admits it, the sooner they’ll stop underestimating Donald Trump or being caught off guard when some racist crap gets pooped out on live television.

But please, tell me more about how a white lady took something a black woman did without giving the black woman any credit. That’s totally different from exposing the inherent racism that underlies the entire Trump phenomenon.
